How To Be Kick-Ass Like Hermione Granger Your Freshman Year

Going into Freshman year of college is honestly a lot more like going to Hogwarts than you would expect. It's your first time living away from home, your professors are very odd, and honestly, you need to study for finals even harder than Hermione studied for her O.W.L.S. Here are five Witchy Tips and Tricks to be the brightest (and hopefully more sociable) Witch of your age.

 1) Make friends with people who you can teach or who can teach you

"It's LeviOsa, not LeviOsA!" Teaching is absolutely the learning strategy to go with whether practicing divination or chemistry. Relaying information to others helps you remember it in your own way and can help your friends in the process. Many studies have shown that this strategy actually works! It's also a  good way to make new friends and keep yourself from being isolated. College tends to constantly drown you in work so it's best to try to make friends in your own major so you can study as a unit (but it's also okay to branch out!)  So whip out your wand or your whiteboard and start teaching!

2) Don't be afraid to try new things

"You're a great wizard, you know. I'm not as good as you"
"Me! Books! And Cleverness! There are more important things - Friendship and bravery." While Hermione did quite a spell on her studies she definitely knew how to find a balance. Although we can't all have a time turner like she did we can manage planners. There is a lot to pack into a day in the life of a college student but Hermione knew sleep and studying are two of the most important. However to keep yourself mentally and physically well time Must be set aside for socializing and exercise. Life is an adventure you will want to look back on your college days and reminisce about all of the wild 2am journeys. However, those moments won't ever come to life if you don't keep your body healthy and set aside time to make connections.

3) Discover yourself

"Mudblood, and proud of it." College really is the time to go out and discover yourself. The reason for this is it's the only time you'll be in the most condensed population of people around your age. So it's the best time to find your community and define your values. You can mainly do this through clubs. Don't know what club to go do? Call one of your friends from back home! Surely they can think of something that you both might like in common or you can try something that they like and get to know them better as a person.

4) Major in what you're interested in -NOT your friend's and Parents Interests

“If being good at Divination means I have to pretend to see death omens in a lump of tea leaves, I’m not sure I’ll be studying it much longer!” Hermione hated this class. Like ready to drop it on the first day kind of hate. In college if you get this feeling within the first two weeks of the class, Honestly just drop the class. You don't want it to hurt your GPA. Trust me it is incredibly difficult to study for a class that won't help you in your future. If mom and pops really want you to take this class maybe evaluate why you hate it and try to find a study tactic or different perpective to change your mindset. You also need to remember that at this point if you are paying your own loans you are also your own witch so if it doesn't please ya it don't need ya. You do your own thing even if it's brewing potions in a shack.

5) Don't forget the people who've been there all along

No, Harry, you listen, we’re coming with you. That was decided months ago – years, really.” Whether it's your parent's, siblings, or old friends. Don't you dare forget about them. They've been there with you from the start or at least early on and they want to see you succeed. I'm not saying you need to call them everyday but a facetime once or twice a week honestly wouldn't hurt.

Remember, with good friends and a bit of magic you can pass any class as bad as Snapes or fight any bitch as bad as Voldemort.
